How to export members and chats from WhatsApp Communities

WhatsApp has no member-list export for groups or Communities. The only built-in export is Export chat, which saves a group's messages as a text file that can't be imported into another tool.

Quick answer

Export a group's chat history: Open the group chat. → Tap More options, then More. → Tap Export chat. → Choose Without media or Include media, then pick where to save or send the file.

Method 1

Export a group's chat history

  1. 1

    Open the group chat.

  2. 2

    Tap More options, then More.

  3. 3

    Tap Export chat.

  4. 4

Choose Without media or Include media, then pick where to save or send the file.

Text file (.txt), optionally with mediaThis is a record of messages, not a member list, and it can't be re-imported into anything.
Method 2

Move members without an export

  1. 1

Set up your community and first event on the new platform.

  2. 2

Post the join link in your WhatsApp announcement group, with a short note on why you're moving.

  3. 3

Ask members to join themselves, so they consent to the move and their details stay accurate.

  4. 4

Share the link again before your next few sessions.

  5. 5

Keep the WhatsApp group running for a while so nobody is left behind.

Members re-join via linkThis is the reliable route, because WhatsApp doesn't give admins a downloadable member list.

Limits to know before you start

  • There is no official way to download a list of group or Community members.
  • Export chat gives messages only, as a text file that can't be imported elsewhere.
  • Members' phone numbers are personal data: ask them to join the new space themselves rather than copying numbers across.
WhatsApp Communities’s own instructions

Moving your community somewhere new

  1. 01

Tell your members first. Say where you're moving, why, and when the old space will go quiet.

  2. 02

Keep the export safe. Only contact people in ways they agreed to, and follow data-protection law such as India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

  3. 03

Set up the new home before you announce it: your first event, your Hive, and who can join.

  4. 04

Run one event in both places, then point everyone to the new link.
